How to Determine or Find Your MAC Address

Hey Guy,

Find out mac address

Do you need to figure out what your MAC address is? I’ll explain how to do that in this article! But first, here’s what a MAC address is (excerpt from Wikipedia):
“In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most network adapters (NICs). It is a number that acts like a name for a particular network adapter, so, for example, the network cards (or built-in network adapters) in two different computers will have different names, or MAC addresses, as would an Ethernet adapter and a wireless adapter in the same computer, and as would multiple network cards in a router. However, it is possible to change the mac address on most of today’s hardware.”

Windows MAC Address

So what do you need to do to get your MAC address? It’s pretty simple actually! Let’s start off with getting a PC MAC address:
1. Click on Start and then click Run. In the text box, type in CMD. Click OK.
cmd run
2. In the DOS window (the black box), type in the following without the quotes: “ipconfig /all” and press Enter.
physical address ipconfig
You’ll notice a lot of stuff that might not make sense! Basically, this command gives you all the information for any network card in your system including the wired (Ethernet) network adapter, bluetooth adapter, any virtual adapters and the wireless adapter. So you’ll have to look under the specific heading you need because each adapter will have it’s own MAC address.
The MAC address is usually the last item in the list for each adapter and it’s called Physical Address. You’ll see a set of pairs of numbers separated by colons, i.e. 09:F2:96:3E…etc. This is your MAC address for that particular adapter.
You can then use the MAC address in your router settings if you are setting up MAC address filtering, which allows you to specify only certain devices that can connect to your WiFi network. Note that every device connected to your network has a MAC address including smartphones, printers, etc.

If you have an Apple computer like a Macbook or Mac Mini, you can get your Mac address following the steps below.
1. Open System Preferences and click on Network.
2. Click on the connection that you want the MAC address for and then click on the Advanced button at the bottom right.

3. Then click on the Hardware tab and you’ll see MAC Address written right at the top.

Finding MAC Addresses for Other Devices

What about other devices on your network like an IP camera or an iPhone or a wireless printer? Well, you can obviously try to get the MAC address from the device itself, if possible. For example, on an iPhone, you can go to Settings, General, About and you should see a line called Wi-Fi Address.

However, there are times when it’s not so easy to find the MAC address for a device, so in those cases there is another way to get the IP address of any device on your network and that’s by using your wireless router. Since your router is probably your DHCP server on your network, it will have all the IP addresses and MAC addresses for all devices connected. You can log into your router and basically browse around until you find the LAN page, which will show you all the connected devices and their associated info.

So those are all the ways you can get the MAC address for a computer (PC or Mac) and any other network device connected to your router. If you’re having any trouble finding a MAC address, post a question here and we’ll try to help. Enjoy!
I hope U liked it...😎😎
